Are you eligible for the £5,000 heat pump grant?

The UK government recently announced a brand new £5,000 heat pump grant that would be awarded to homeowners in England and Wales. This grant follows the end of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme – previously set up to encourage homeowners to switch to a more sustainable heating alternative.

Below, we look at the new £5,000 heat pump grant and discuss who might be eligible to take advantage of this. Read on to find out more.

What Is the £5,000 Heat Pump Grant?

If you haven’t heard the news, households in England and Wales will soon be able to receive £5,000 grants. This grant is being offered to those who decide to replace their old gas boilers with low carbon heat pumps.

This comes as part of the Heat and Buildings Strategy set out by the Government. 90,000 homes will take advantage of an allocated £450 million which has been allocated to the boiler upgrade scheme.

Who Is Eligible?

Unfortunately, the new £5,000 heat pump grant is only available for homeowners in England and Wales. Any small landlords, homeowners and private landlords should be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade scheme. However, those who own new build properties and social housing will not be eligible.

The good news is that homeowners don’t need to do much because the companies installing the heat pumps will apply on their behalf. This grant amount will then be deducted from the cost of the installation.

However, it should be noted that there is some cause for concern as there are around 27.8 million households in the UK but funding is only available for 90,000 homes. It doesn’t hurt to check if your home will be eligible ahead of time.

Replacing the Renewable Heat Incentive

The new Boiler Upgrade strategy is set to come into place in April 2022. This will launch just in time for the end of the Renewable Heat Incentive which was previously extended. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government funding scheme that enables eligible UK residents to claim money back for heating their homes with renewable technology.

Will This Work?

It is clear that the UK government is making some steps towards improving the state of the environment in Britain. However, there is still a lot of progress to be made. Hopefully, homeowners across the UK will take advantage of the new grant and make some changes.
