Can You Make Money From The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive in 2021?

Have you ever considered switching your home energy system to something more energy efficient? This may sound like an expensive activity but actually, in the long run, there are opportunities to make some money back. Thanks to the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive set up by the UK government, homeowners have been receiving quarterly cash payments for switching to an eligible technology.

Here’s what you need to know about the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive and how you can benefit from it.

What is the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive?

If you aren’t familiar with the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, you should know that this was put in place as an incentive for greener homes. Those who have certain eligible technologies in their homes such as solar water heating, air source heat pumps and biomass boilers can benefit from this scheme.

Under the scheme guidance, payments are made for 7 years, based on the renewable heat that is generated by your heating system. This scheme first launched back in 2014 and has provided financial support for eligible homeowners for a long time since then.

Has This Scheme Changed Since Then?

As you may expect, the requirements set out by the government have changed slightly in line with the current environmental impact and targets set out by the various UK nations. Back in 2016, the government published some changes to the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, taking into account some feedback from users in a consultation stage.

Additionally, in April 2021, there were some further changes to the regulations including the relaxation of the requirement for accreditation applications to be submitted within 12 months of the eligible heating system’s commissioning date.

This means that those who have a heating system commissioned on or after 1 March 2019, can now apply for the funding, until the deadline date of 31 March 2022.

How Can You Make Money?

It is entirely possible to make money from the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, as long as you are eligible. The government pays a fee for every kWh of renewable energy generated by the installed technology.

You’ll need to make sure that you own your own home or you are a private or social landlord to be eligible for these payments. If your application is successful, you’ll receive quarterly payments based on the heat demand that has been calculated on your EPC.
